Handling multiple things at once can be a little overwhelming for employees when their plates are already full of tasks and projects. It is natural to feel the blues and morale might hit a stump in such situations. However, if you observe the morale dropping down more and more often, it might be a serious sign leading to a complete breakdown at an organization.

Morale — Definition and factors affecting it

Employee morale is a complex phenomenon and is influenced by numerous factors — both known and unknown. It is usually defined as the ability of an individual or a group to come together and work consistently in pursuit of a shared goal.

Factors affecting individual and team morale

There could be endless reasons due to which employee morale could nosedive straight down the line. Some reasons could be controllable and while others could be hard to act upon. Below are some of the common factors that could cause a dip in office mood:

  • The nature of work
  • The level of satisfaction
  • Poor or ineffective leadership
  • Difficult employees
  • Work environment
  • External influences
  • Cancellation of team benefits

Relationship between morale and productivity

There is a direct relationship between team morale and productivity. Mathematically,

Morale ∝ Productivity

When group goals are taken care of and individual goals such as freedom of work, salary, etc are satisfied, it leads to motivated employees, so standard of performance increases, which in turn leads to high productivity and vice-versa.

It’s no surprise that employee morale translates to happy employees which in turn, means a boost in overall productivity. As a manager or a boss, if you observe low employee morale in your team, take quick action(s) to not let it intensify and affect your work-culture in any way.

In this article, we share some quick and effective employee morale ideas that can improve team mood instantly. Let’s see what these ideas are:

  1. Appreciate a job well done

Your team members are working their face off week after week, month after month, and at times year after year. There are times when the work gets nerve-wracking but a remark like ‘Good job David’ from a senior/team leader/manager can do wonders to boost his morale. Taking a moment to recognize the insane amount of hard work your team members are putting is the easiest and quickest way to make them feel valued. Do you know that 69% of employees feel that they would work harder if their efforts were better appreciated? Appreciating team members’ work is no less than an elixir to boost their morale and encourage to work harder.

2. Learn from each other

Employee morale is pretty much dependent on the team members and their camaraderie between them. As a team consists of diverse individuals, you can put their skills and strengths to a good use. The more learning-oriented and playful a team is, the more satisfied and joyful they would feel in the workplace. Consequently, you would observe a steep rise in employee’s workplace happiness and team morale. Get the whole pack together and give them an opportunity to share their talents and gifts with each other. Apart from being a great team building exercise, it would encourage Sam or Lucy in your team to take a lesson or two in something they are excited about.

3. Go for random acts of kindness

They say that happiness gets doubled when it is shared with others. It is no secret that people go head over heels when someone goes an extra mile or does a small considerate gesture for them. If you see Julia working tirelessly and staying beyond her working hours while working on an important campaign, be a little considerate. And, if required, give her an day off the next day. Or surprise your team members with pizzas and drinks when the team is having a rough day. Such small but meaningful random acts of kindness would not only light up their days but would enthuse a great work-culture as well and boost their morale.

4. A 20-minutes music concert

Just the thought of music at the workplace is enough to break the monotony and get your foot tapping to your favorite tunes. Imagine the level of energy enthused in the workplace and the employees’ productivity would sky-rocket automatically. Therefore, it makes sense to have a 15–20 (or whatever the number) minute at the middle of the day — exactly when you are most vulnerable to lose interest in work. Blast off some pumping beats and let employee groove to the tunes to rejuvenate and replenish their energy levels. As a result, they would focus better and the overall morale of the office would be always upbeat and cheerful.

5. Doggy de-stress

Oftentimes, the work gets on our nerves when there are loads of deadlines, meetings, and distractions at work. Cut-throat competition and aggressive tactics to get ahead of the competitors could take the morale of a team to a downward spiral. As organizations are beginning to realize the importance of wellbeing at work, they are taking help from therapeutic dogs. It is relatively a new trend which is making every employee fall in love with it. Dog teams enter the workplace with these four-legged adorable creatures that are well-trained to de-stress your staff and create an environment of relaxation. It is also a great team-building activity that can bring everyone together.

6. Be ‘active’ together

No one needs a lecture why being fit and healthy is the need of the hour. So, we would straightaway jump to emphasize how to encourage your team members to be more healthy and kick some ass because getting healthy equals to more productivity. If you feel productive, your morale would automatically go up. Get in touch with your HR manager and organize sports events or participate in athletics event as a company. Running relays, joining a sports league, hosting a corporate challenge, volunteering for a social cause are some of the affordable yet fun activities that bring co-workers together and create a friendly atmosphere at the workplace.

7. Get a little personal and Invite families

There’s a reason why most of us place our family photographs on our work desk. Just a look at your loved ones could significantly improve your mood and morale instantly. Many companies are inviting spouses or parents of employees to give them an insight what their family members do and how they are contributing to an organization. Being appreciated or rewarded in the front of your loved ones would obviously enhance your self-image in your family and boost your morale.

BONUS TIP: Stick those cheesy motivational quotes on your desk to instantly feel inspired and boost your morale. Do try. It works ;)
